It's Tuesday, April 12 1988. I'm sitting in Sri Arunachala Ramana Mandiram at 7:40pm, thinking of you all, there in Hyderabad and Bhimavaram; and at your request, Rao-Maharaj, I'm recording a few of these songs of which I'll go on continuing in a moment
04:39 Saraswati Vandana
ya kundendu tushāra hāra dhavalā
ya shubhra vastrāvrita
ya veena vara danda manditakara
ya shveta padmāsana
ya brahma achyutaha shankara prabrithibhih
devai sadā poojitha
sā mām pātu saraswathi bhagavati
nishyesha jyādyāpaha
Oh Goddess Sarasvathi,
who is fair as a jasmine flower,
the moon or a snow flake,
who is dressed in white
and whose hands are adorned by veena,
who is seated in a white lotus,
to whom Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara pray,
Please protect us.
09:28
Today I was thinking about writing to you all; then I was thinking that I should make this tape; because you have asked me some time ago. Then I was thinking of coming to Hyderabad to see you; then I was thinking of coming to Bhimavaram; and then I came to the temple. [And] Any time I think of you all, I become inspired. So, with this inspiration I'm getting from you, I'll continue playing a few more songs and pray that Sri Bhagavan may bless us all; that we can come together again, that Rao-maharaj may come and visit us, or we may go there and visit him; or we may go on pilgrimage somewhere together. Anyhow, Sri Bhagavan has brought us all together in Him; that if we abide in Him, all our desires are fulfilled.

30:36 Old man River (Selected verses)
Ol' man river, that ol' man river
He don't say nothin', but he must know somethin'
He just keeps rollin', he keeps on rollin' along
He don't plant tatters, and he don't plant cotton
And them what plants em, are soon forgotten
But ol' man river, just keeps rollin' along
You and me, we sweat and strain
Body all achin' and racked with pain
Tote that barge and lift that bail
You get a little drunk (you show a little grit) and you lands in jail
I gets weary, and sick of trying (I keeps laughin' instead of cryin')
I'm tired of livin', but I'm scared of dyin' (I must keep fightin' until I'm dyin')
But ol' man river, he just keeps rollin' along
35:15
That was a song sung by the negroes of the United States, depicting their difficulties during the period of slavery; and how they envied the river, the Mississippi, which seems detached or aloof from the problems they were experiencing. This is another one, about a balm in Gilead. The balm in Gilead is Jesus. Gilead was a province in which Peter was born and lived and walked. It was at that time called Gilead. This is also another one of the negro spiritual songs, which I like because they used to sing them with great fervor and feeling, for during that period, they had great difficulties, and they had noone to turn to but Jesus; and when God puts us under those circumstances, then we can turn to Him with all the more fervor, faith and benefit.
36:43 Balm in Gilead
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul
Sometimes I feel discouraged and deep I feel the pain
In prayers the holy spirit revives my soul again
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul
If you can't pray like Peter, if you can't be like Paul
Go home and tell your neighbur, he died to save us all
There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole
There is a balm in Gilead, to heal the wounded soul
41:25
The next song, which I am about to offer before you, is called "Going Home". It is of the same type, and the home which is sung about in this song, you can identify it with the spiritual home which we ALL return to, so that, sooner or later, Somehow the melody appeals to me; and the words appeal to me; and I learned how to sing it! I hope you can find something from it.
42:22 Going Home
Goin' home, goin' home, I'm a goin' home;
Quiet-like, some still day, I'm jes' goin' home.
It's not far, jes' close by, through an open door;
Work all done, care laid by, goin' to fear no more.
Mother's there 'spectin' me, father's waitin' too;
Lots o' folk gather'd there, all the friends I knew,
All the friends I knew. Home, I'm goin' home!
Nothin lost, all's gain, no more fret nor pain,
No more stumblin' on the way, no more longin' for the day,
Goin' to roam no more! mornin' star lights the way,
Res'less dream all done;
Shadows gone, break o' day, real life jes' begun.
There's no break, there's no end, jes' a livin' on;
Wide awake, with a smile, goin' on and on.
Goin' home, goin' home, I'm jes' goin' home,
goin' home, goin' home, goin' home!
