Margo Martin
obituary
Margo Martin was known for her love of animals and helpless creatures and for her love of plants, especially succulents and flowers.
Margo was gifted in many ways - art, acting, language. She was blessed with beauty, intelligence, insight and what could be a sharp wit. Margo was a behind-the-scenes proofreader of 'The Maharshi newsletter' published by Arunachala Ashrama, Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi Center. She edited the reminiscences of Arunachala Bhakta Bhagavata published under the title 'In Search of Self.
Margo had a varied, colorful early adulthood. Following her graduation from South Oak Cliff High School in Texas, Margo worked as a dancer at the Sand's Hotel in Las Vegas. She moved to New York City where she studied art at The Cooper Union. She also studied acting and was an avid student of film. She traveled throughout Europe. Margo also worked as a model. Later, her jobs involved promotional writing for scientific publications. She taught graphic arts at Pace College as an adjunct professor. She was an eminently well read autodidact. On coming to Arunachala Ashrama, all these pursuits, however, took second place to her practice of meditation and her life goal of Self-realization.
Margo was a complex person who struggled with insomnia and bouts of depression in her early life. These became less over time. As her practice of meditation deepened, Margo's compassion and wisdom grew and blossomed.
Margo Martin died peacefully in the early morning hours of January 17, 2024, following a months-long battle with colon cancer.
Margo leaves behind a large group of friends and fellow-devotees who have cherished her friendship over the decades. She is survived by her loving daughter Annie Troutman, her niece Jennifer Martin Spera and her nephew Joel Martin.
On Monday 22 January, friends attended a service held at the Fresh Pond Crematory at 2:00pm
