New York

Dedicated to the Practice of the teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, Arunachala Ashrama was founded by his devotee, Sri Arunachala Bhakta Bhagawat, in New York City on December 7, 1966. The Ashrama is a registered charity incorporated in the State of New York, maintained by a team of dedicated volunteers.

The Founding Of Arunachala Ashrama

On a visit to Sri Ramanasramam in 1960, Arthur Osborne suggested to Arunachala Bhakta Bhagawat that when he return to the USA he should begin holding meetings to introduce Sri Ramana Maharshi to Western seekers. It wasn't until November 12th, 1965 that Bhagawat began weekly meetings in a room at the American Buddhist Society on the west side of Manhattan in New York City. This led to the renting of facilities  at 78 St.Marks Place and then at 342 East 6 Street. In 1987 the Ashrama moved to the borough of Queens, east of Manhattan and now occupies a building in Jamaica Estates, a quiet residential area of Queens.

The Ashrama carries nearly all of the English books published by Sri Ramanasramam, India. It also distributes video tapes and audio CDs. Meditation is practiced every evening. Seekers and devotees are always welcome. Please call before your first visit, let us know when you plan to come or leave a message.
