Mārgarzhi Tamiḷ Parayanam
Sangeetha Swaminathan

Dhanur Maasam, or Mārgazhi masam is especially recommended for spiritual sadhana. In the early morning hours of mārgazhi, Tamiḷ Nadu has a centuries old tradition of singing two exquisite devotional poems, Tiruppavai on Vishnu composed by the female saint Andal and Tiruvempavai on Lord Shiva composed by the saint Manickavasagar and part of his Tiruvasagam. Our own Muruganar has composed 'Ramana Tiruvempavai' in the same format in his Ramana Sannidhi Murai. Sri Ramanasramam has a tradition of chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam and singing one verse from each of these three compositions every day of the month at 4:30 AM. Sangeetha Swaminathan, a devotee with Arunachala Ashrama in the US, has produced an album with 31 tracks corresponding to each day's parayana in the same tune as followed in the ashram. She is accompanied by her son Rishabha Swaminathan on the guitar and Keerthi Ramani on the mridangam. Niranjana Ganesh helped with the audio recording, Hari Moorthy with the Tamiḷ lyrics, and Rishabha Swaminathan produced the youtube videos along with lyrics in Tamiḷ and English. The songs are also available on platforms such as Spotify. We hope devotees find these exquisite verses, rendered in melodious tunes, beneficial for their sadhana.
