Reminiscences
DennisArthur:
Graham was a consummate teller of tall-tales; exaggerations that were always based on actual experience; but one could never tell where the experience ended and the exagerration began.😉
Once he described having to ride the back roads of Maine[2] as a waking-nightmare in which the driver, with cigarette in one hand, coffee in the other, was having an animated conversation with (ie, looking at) the passenger[him] while navigating the bumper-to-bumper traffic 'round the curves in the rain with his knee.
Arthur, Jyoti and Graham were riding to Nova Scotia from Ashrama-NY. We pulled into the Maine mile 24 rest area on Rt.95 at Graham's request. He had been ona roll, telling fantastic stories of guys at a bar in London; one example was of a guy who was so strong and his hands so big, that he could lift a cow with one hand ! When he raced off to the restrooms, As Jyoti got out of the car, i turned to her and "Aren't those stories amazing !" She looks at me seriously and says "you don't BELIEVE him, do you !?!"
Ten years later, at Arunachala, i see Graham gesticulating, arms wide and all over the place, in front of this 10 year old who was looking up at him wide-eyed. I went over when he was done and asked what he was telling her; He was regaling her with how he had wrestled and overcome a 10 ft long snake that had attacked him. I had a good laugh because not only had i seen the 'snake'[3] with Graham a couple of days prior — i was little girl 10 years before!
